Following Jack's death in 1996, the Smith family
contacted the
Huntington Library in San Marino, California to inquire about any interest they
might have in receiving a donation of Jack's papers.
Sara S. (Sue)
Hodson, Curator of Literary Manuscripts at the Huntington
expressed an interest on behalf of the Huntington in preserving Jack's personal
papers including correspondence, clippings, photographs, gifts from readers, and
reporters' notebooks dating back to 1935.
But, as she frequently does, Sue had
to wait. Following the death of their mother Denny in 2004, Curt
and Doug Smith again contacted Sue and completed the donation in 2005.
After Sue has finished curating the collection the papers will be
available to scholars who are interested in the history of southern
California during the second two thirds of the 20th Century.
